Warning Signs for Vision Loss

While it may not seem like it, vision loss is very common. About 12 million Americans suffer from blindness, and even more suffer from partial vision loss. Vision loss can be a symptom of other eye conditions, or it can be temporary. It’s important to get an eye exam at least once a year to avoid permanent vision loss. At Vision Plus, serving San Antonio and Bandera, TX, we can help. Our optometrist can diagnose any eye condition you have and look for underlying problems. By staying on top of your eye health, you can avoid serious health problems, like vision loss.

Symptoms to Look for

There are several signs and symptoms that indicate an eye disease that could lead to vision loss. Here are some of the most common.

Eye Pain

Any kind of eye pain is worth examining. While eye pain is often the result of a known injury or focus-caused eye strain, it may be caused by underlying conditions like inflammation, cataracts, or glaucoma. Even sun damage can cause eye pain that can eventually lead to vision loss. All eye pain should be diagnosed by our optometrist.

Flickering Lights or Halos

Bright lights often look different to those suffering from early sight loss problems. If you are noticing flickering lights or halos emanating from lights or objects, it could be a very early sign of vision impairment. This could be caused by damage to your eye lens, cataracts, or other conditions.

Floaters

Do you notice debris or objects, often fuzzy or blurry, in your line of vision that are not physically there? In many cases, this is caused by age-related eye deterioration, though it can also be a sign of cataracts or glaucoma, among other things.

Difficulty Seeing at Night

Many people suffering from long-term vision loss report first experiencing difficulty seeing at night or in other situations with low amounts of light. In these cases, the eyes may just take an extra-long time to adjust to the lower levels of light, or they may not adjust at all.

Blurry Vision

When things start to become distorted and hazy, it could be leading to long-term sight loss. A number of conditions can cause blurry sight, including glaucoma, a torn retina, or uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of tissue in the eye wall). Even if your blurry vision clears up, there's a chance that it's still an early sign of more serious eye conditions. It's important to make an optometry appointment just in case.
