Understanding Macular Degeneration

The macula is the part of the back region of the retina that is responsible for central vision. As we age, there are tiny tissues inside the macula that can slowly deteriorate, leading to vision loss. Some noticeable symptoms include the inability to recognize faces or drive, especially at night. There are two types of macular degeneration, explained in more detail below.

  • Dry Macular Degeneration: This is the more common form of macular degeneration. It can develop slowly over time, so symptoms are barely noticeable. The only way to detect it in the early stages is by a comprehensive eye exam with an optometrist.
  • Wet Macular Degeneration: This form is less common. Small blood vessels can erupt and leak blood and fluids, interfering with the functioning of the retina.

Risk Factors for Macular Degeneration

Age is the most considerable risk when it comes to macular degeneration. If you're over 60, it's important to have regular appointments with an optometrist. Other risk factors include a family history of the disease, smoking, diabetes, and obesity.

Macular Degeneration Treatment

There is no cure for this eye disease, but advanced technologies have allowed eye doctors to slow its progression. Treatment options = range from medications to help with blood vessel growth, intraocular injections, or even laser therapy. However, it's much easier to manage if with early detection. Our eye doctor will assess your condition to determine whether or not you are suffering from macular degeneration and recommend treatment accordingly.
